Luis Gordillo (Seville, 1934) studied at the Faculty of Law in Seville and then for two years at the School of Fine Art in Seville. In 1958 he travelled to Paris, where, influenced by art autre, he painted his first art informel works. He held his first individual exhibition in 1959 (Sala de Información y Turismo, Seville). Around 1962 his painting was evolving towards a new figurative approach which successively echoed the work of Bacon and Giacometti, American pop art, and geometric normativism. In 1963 he began a process of psychoanalysis, which was to be fundamental for him and would be prolonged "interminably". In 1967 he joined the Nueva Generación group, founded by Juan Antonio Aguirre but two years later he suffered a breakdown which temporarily interrupted his work as a painter. His artistic talent continued to develop, however, and he turned to drawing, adopting an automatic approach. The rigidity of geometric art gave way to more organic forms, which he exhibited in 1971. His work was exceptionally fresh and uninhibited and he became engrossed in the process of liquefying figures, exercising a powerful fascination over a number of young artists, who greatly respected his mastery, compensating to a certain extent for the incomprehension and mistrust still expressed by some members of his own generation. In 1974 Centro M-11 in Seville held the first retrospective exhibition of his work and three years later a retrospective was organised by the Directorate General for Fine Art. In the 1980s the emphasis on figurative elements declined and he became more interested in complex symbolism. Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held in 1981, 1993 and 2007 by the Museum of Fine Art in Bilbao, the Valencian Institute of Modern Art and the Reina Sofía National Museum and Art Centre in Madrid, respectively.
